Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Parents:
The sign up for Battle of the Books is here! During 4th and 5th grade lunch periods this month the Battle of the Books PTO-run committee will introduce this popular program that will be taking place at Oak Street School.
Battle of the Books is a fun and exciting reading program. Student teams read books from a pre-determined list and prepare for a Battle competition in early April 2016. Being part of this program is a commitment. Your child will be part of a 4-6 person reading team. The Battle is a quiz competition where student teams answer questions about assigned books and score points for correct answers. It is truly a team effort!
The Battle is for all levels of readers. Books are chosen within a large range of difficulty and genres to include most interests. Each child is expected to read three-four books from the list by the beginning of April. The books can be absorbed in any format; in addition to reading on one’s own, students could listen to an audio book, take turns reading with a parent, or find another way that works for them. We are looking for children who LOVE books!
Please talk to your child about the importance of honoring the commitment they will make to their team. Battle of the Books is a team activity and other students will be depending on your child. Please make sure that they want to participate before signing the contract. This competitive event is meant to be FUN for all involved and good sportsmanship is expected during all activities that are part of the Battle. Each team will be required to have a team parent in order to participate in the program. We encourage you to read through the attached program summary for more details. We will collect participation contracts in mid- January, and in late January we will meet with the students and select teams and books, and shortly thereafter we will ask teams to designate a team parent. By the first week of February 2016 the Battle reading will begin!
If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at [email protected].
On behalf of our committee and the OSS administration, we are eagerly awaiting the launch of the 8th annual Battle of the Books at OSS.
Best,
Dawn Wiehe & Kim Elber - BOTB 2016 Co-Chairs
