Bernards Township Parents for Exceptional Children
The mission of the Bernards PEC is to provide the support that families, educators and community organizations need to help individuals with disabilities reach their full potential. We also strive to create an environment of understanding and acceptance for persons with disabilities within the community.
The 2024-25 SEPAC representative for Oak Street School is Erica Fitzpatrick.
While the PEC is not a part of the PTO, we do work together to ensure an inclusive environment for all students.

How do we advocate for all Bernards PEC families?
Parent representatives for the Bernards PEC serve as liaisons on the Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) meetings with district administration and Board of Education members. Our SEPAC representatives bring concerns to the attention of the special services administration at these quarterly meetings. The current list of SEPAC representatives, along with their school and contact link can be found on our website. http://BernardsPEC.com/about-us/PAC/
Additionally, the Bernards PEC Co-Presidents and Executive Board members keep up to date on district news and policies affecting students who receive special services by attending monthly meetings with the school administrations, PTO presidents, and participation on the BT Connect committee.
Programs
A key part of our efforts are put toward creating and implementing a variety of programs. The Bernards PEC organizes and subsidizes recreational and educational programs for students, parents and families; organizes and funds a district-wide disability awareness program; and hosts training sessions for students, ages 10 and up, to participate in a peer mentor program; and distributing information about local community programs and workshops through our weekly eBlast.
Fundraising
The Bernards PEC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with no membership dues. Thanks to our fundraising efforts, we are able to enhance district special education programs and services and help fulfill teacher wish lists through our donations to the Board of Education. Additional funding for disability awareness workshops, mentor training, program subsidies, and family fun events requires solid financials each year.
How can you help?
All of this activity is overseen by volunteer executive board members, comprising parents of students receiving special education services. The Bernards PEC depends on the involvement of many dedicated parent volunteers and generous members from our community. Giving your time and energy to any of our committees really can make a great impact! At root, we are a support and educational group for families receiving special education services. Working together, we can ensure that we maximize the learning experience of our children, provide needed support, connect families, and strengthen the engagement and investment of our community toward people of all abilities!
